Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater during daylight hours. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote activism. DuVernay learned to be socially aware from her mother. DuVernay was a child with her family in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began producing for broadcast journalism while she was still in college. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the waste belonging to one of the juries. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she made the decision to go into the publicity industry. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. The year 1999 was the time she founded her own company that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
